About this deal

As well as being an important story, Cuckoo Summer is an ideal landscape for me; it’s a farm, it’s a community and it’s full of meadows and fells.

Ross Welford introduces Time Travelling with a Tortoise, the sequel to Time Travelling with a Hamster, and a whole new time travel adventure! For reasons of their own, they are determined to keep the news secret but, for all Tommy's local knowledge and all Sally's resourcefulness, can this be possible? Against all odds, the navigator escapes by parachute, landing in a remote dale where he is discovered by local boy, Tommy, and evacuee, Sally. The only person who can make him smile is Sally, an evacuee from Tyneside living with sour old Farmer Scarcross who is their nearest neighbour. I counted sixteen different plays on Scarcross’ name in her references to him: Stinkcross, Scarecrow, Skunkcross… each is funny and apt.

Tommy and Sally’s friendship, Sally’s story, Tommy’s concerns and then their secret, build a truly absorbing story that we recommend highly to our readers. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. How is it that she learns so quickly and diligently during Aunt Annie’s Sunday School, determined to pick up everything it seems she’s missed… like reading and writing, and using cutlery? Author of eight novels, including The Season Ticket, Give Us This Day and Mr McCool, Jonathan's work has been filmed, staged and Radio 4 serialised. This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally). It's just so evocatively written - and what a triumph to see this landing in young readers hands, not only sharing the beauty of the countryside but also sharing a little bit of our history too.

However, they soon find that they are in danger too, and questions are being asked about Sally's past. The story centres on two children, one resident farmer, being brought up by three aunts while the men are away fighting, and one evacuee, who turns out to be a runaway. The place is almost a character in its own right, with an immersive understanding of farming at that time. An originality comes from the tender friendship between the two, particularly in the form of the language they use - the runaway in her Geordie accent and words, and the farmer's son in terms of his affinity with the natural landscape surrounding him.Within a dozen pages, I'd been won over, and found myself totally engrossed in a rattling story with an endearing pair of main characters. Contrary to what Tommy thinks, she decides they must hide him – and Sally, tough, resourceful, sharp as nails, knows how to fight to get her way. Together the children seek to keep the airman’s whereabouts a secret, which sets off a chain of events that changes their lives. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. And so, all the glorious sights and sounds of British nature have flown and grown their way into these pages.
