His body of work includes the groundbreaking graphic novels Watchmen , V for Vendetta , The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen , and Lost Girls , as well as the novels Voice of the Fire and Jerusalem and the poem The Mirror of Love . Gull envelops himself into his work, assaulting the organism of the East End like a disease striking a patient; the spatio-temporal presentation of his fervent disease accelerating the demise of the nineteenth century while delivering the twentieth. My all-time favorite graphic novel… an immense, majestic work about the Jack the Ripper murders, the dark Victorian world they happened in, and the birth of the 20th century.

It has links to the Lettrist and Situationist Internationals, revolutionary groups influenced by Marxist and anarchist theory, and the attitudes and methods of Dadaists and Surrealists. Among his many awards are the Hugo Award, the Locus Award, the Bram Stoker Award, the Eisner Award, and the International Horror Guild Award. My first experience with From Hell was the 2001 Hollywood adaptation by the Hughes Brothers and starring Johnny Depp as Abberline, Sir Ian Holm as Dr. The award-winning bestseller From Hell, often ranked among the greatest graphic novels of all time, takes on haunting new dimensions in From Hell: Master Edition, enhanced with impressionistic hues by Eddie Campbell himself. When the baby is forcibly given away, and the mother is locked up in an asylum and made invalid by Dr. Printing anything in color was difficult, laborious and expensive, especially in cash-strapped 1980s Britain.

This fictional Gull goes about his business with procedural detachment, devoid of consent or dignity. The primary crime of the feature film being that what was essentially deep and complex character study of the murderer, the victims and the detective is compacted into run-of-the-mill whodunnit. The medical gaze becomes a mirror: perhaps the model of medicine we participate in is inherently diseased. However, 30 years later, Campbell finally accepted the challenge and chose to do all his coloring digitally with all of its palates and options previously unimaginable. Engaging with From Hell from the perspective of a GP, one feels compelled to reflect on certain issues with a different perspective to the casual reader. George’s Bloomsbury Church in the original graphic novel, while it is an impressive structure it does not seem especially out of place in its West End neighborhood. The original version was a frightening and relentless journey into the guts of poor violated Eddowes and into Gull’s early days as a surgeon and even a vision of a London corporate office 100 years into the future. It remains intriguing, particularly within the medical community, that Gull was one of the numerous suspects implicated with the notorious and unsolved Whitechapel murders ascribed to Jack the Ripper.

It roundly manages to condemn many aspects of bigotry, racism, hate, and imperialism; entertain with a mystery married to philosophy and meta physic wondering, and the very nature of the genre. My all-time favorite graphic novel … an immense, majestic work about the Jack the Ripper murders, the dark Victorian world they happened in, and the birth of the 20th century.
