About this deal

It didn’t take long to realise that this was an extended piss-take of Jamie, Nigella, Nigel, Delia et al, and quite a good one at that. The parmesan grater he’s using is one he’s had since his student days (which suggests a greater degree of kitchen aptitude than pretended, but consistency of narrative is evidently not deemed a vital ingredient here). Sloshing back sancerre in Floydian style, May also likes to involve the camera-people as he attempts to learn the art of making a cooking show itself. But this book is perfect for the likes of me, when I do get around to trying some of the recipes myself.

I got quite cross with them - it was the only time on TV I've ever got cross with the crew - but they are bloody annoying, especially because they can all cook. When I was a student in the 1980s, I tried to do a roast Sunday lunch but forgot to turn the oven on and we ended up eating it at 3am. However, if you read the comments underneath, the vast majority totally disagree with the original reviewer, and actually say some very nice things about James and his programmes. There was enough to serve with my kids’ lunch the next day, which is a bonus while she’s still doing remote school. He adds: "Television has got it completely wrong and cooking on television ought to be a waste of time but it's becoming ever more popular. These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our site. Now, given the nature of the show and with the global pandemic restricting many to the confines of their homes, the timing could not be better to launch the new series. The hook with this brand new series, as suggested by May’s introduction, is that he isn’t even trying to pretend that he’s an expert in the kitchen, even if he then goes straight on to knock up an impressive-looking Asian chicken soup, some “Spamen” (a mix of ramen and, yes, Spam) and a glazed salmon dish. It was a very happy coincidence - and almost looks as if we knew lockdown was going to happen but obviously we didn't .

But, actually, he can cook, surprisingly well in fact, rustling up some quite decent pies and lasagnes. He's now the co-landlord The Royal Oak in Swallowcliffe (near his cottage), after its fate appeared to be in peril. He has presented many solo projects on television – ‘Toy Stories’, BBC2’s six-part series with annual updates, ‘James May’s Man Lab’ which ran for three series, ‘James May’s Cars of the People’ and, most recently, ‘Our Man in Japan’. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site.Lucy Mangan for The Guardian gave the series three out of five stars, saying it was "occasionally charming – and mostly slightly dismal".

This is not a fantasy recipe book for food fetishists, full of soft-focus pictures of improbable art food. Some of the more “fancy” cookbooks I have include beautifully rendered food setups but are difficult to make or include several ingredients that are not very obtainable or affordable for everyone. When my brother and his family came into town a week later, we told them about the dish, and we ended up making double the servings for an extended family meal. However, my wife has done a great job at trying out some of the recipes, and most of them have turned out to be pretty great. None of them have actually been something I want to sit down and read when I’m not using it to cook. Before reading the recipes on these pages, or indeed watching my cooking show, you should be aware that I can’t really cook.
