About this deal

I also put on three different bikes. Problem was the same. Also bought brand new cassette and chain. Again the problem stayed. Whereas in the case of the NEO 2, the internals have been significantly refreshed. Albeit that hasn’t resulted in much in the way of new features for us end users. Instead, it’s more about the promise of unknown new stuff down the road.

Unlike conventional trainers, the NEO 2 SE uses the principle of dynamic inertia to simulate your actual body weight. Depending on the simulated incline or your speed, the pedaling feel changes, just like on the road.In combination with Tacx films or Zwift, the NEO 2 can simulate different road surfaces such as cobblestones or gravel through vibration. In some cases, keeping changes to a minimum might not be a bad thing for reliability though. And ultimately it follows Wahoo’s popular model of incremental changes to existing trainers – rather than massive shifts from model to model. It started with a brand new unit produced in 2019 (based on serial number). It worked fine in Zwift erg mode while being in the small chainring.

Compatibility software: Tacx software & app, Zwift, Trainerroad, Kinomap, The Sufferfest and othersAs usual, I put the trainer up against a number of power meters to see how well it handled everything from resistance control accuracy, to speed of change, to any other weird quirks along the way.

For an even more realistic training experience, this turbo trainer can be combined with the Tacx Neo Motion Plate that is designed to add multi-directional movement and more immersion to your indoor training session. We also sell the Motion Plate here. I spoke to Tacx regarding this and the tech team confirmed Tacx was aware of this sensor issue and, despite it being an unusual occurrence, offers a solution consisting of a metal strip that attaches to the crank arm by zip ties. It feels like an awkward workaround, and if you also intend on riding the bike outside, it won’t be easy to remove and will gather dirt. The alternative is to record cadence through a separate stand-alone cadence sensor which is probably a better solution. For Zwifters, this will be a big selling point. Not only is the pedalling action remarkably smooth and consistent, if you are riding in a virtual world such as Zwift’s Wattopia, you will feel the vibrations of wooden slats on a bridge or the judders of cobbles – it all helps to make the indoors feel more like the outdoors. Easily connect your Smart trainer to your bike computer or sports watch. Display your workout data on these devices. A selection of bike computers and sports watches are also able to control the resistance of your Smart bike trainer. Next the NEO 2 has downhill drive simulation, which means that as you go downhill the trainer will forward spin the rear ‘wheel’ (cassette and flywheel since there is no wheel). This means that the trainer will simulate the inertia of going downhill. This is yet another little touch that makes things feel more realistic than they are.The NEO 2 is a great trainer, which could replicate pretty much anything. One thing it did struggle with though was hard sprints from low speed, where the resistance unit wasn't able to offer enough resistance, and you could induce some slip. The new trainer has more powerful magnets which are aligned differently, and those changes mean it's able to cope with those low-speed sprints much better. A handle would really help when it came to moving the unit around, but other than that it is hard to fault the smart trainer itself. Ultimately, I’m not seeing much in the way of anything that’s concerning here accuracy-wise for power. For cadence, there’s a few foibles when making big shifts in cadence of more than about 30RPM (i.e. 60RPM to 90RPM), but since cadence isn’t part of any power algorithm on the NEO 2, there’s no concerns of that spilling over into power accuracy.
